In an imaginary but multi-faceted spectacle, taking place some time around
1470, and centering on the greatest pre-Renaissance composer, Guillaume
Dufay, we enter with this very, very special CD, the world of a grand
wedding feast on New Year’s Day, celebrated with motets and chansons by
Dufay, and with festive instruments to enhance the glory and splendour.
Out of the last blossoming of the medieval era we hear in the typical
Burgundian virtuosity of the vocal polyphonic motets of Dufay how his
richness of musicality in the ‘formes fixes, ‘stile fermata, fauxbourdon
harmonization (basis of the harmonious sonority of the Renaissance) and
‘Ars subtilior’ (isorhythm), and his combination of elements from the ‘Ars
nova’, the polyphonic ‘English manner’ of John Dunstable, and Italian
madrigalisms, reached the point where his music, stylistic and expressive,
passed into the new, musical artistry and ideas of the Renaissance. The
Dufay Spectacle celebrates on this CD Dufay’s genius with an eclectic
presentation of vocal and instrumental, romping and passionate robustness,
plaintive devotional passion, sometimes with slow, dark rhythms, sometimes
with cheerful cascades of melodies, and exciting complex rhythms.
As the chanson ‘Ce jour de l ‘an, which is central to the CD, introduces its
promise for the new year (sung once monodically by the baritone Stephen
Charlesworth, and two improvised versions on vihuela d’arco and psaltery),
‘Ce jour de l’an’ is actually a day to celebrate. Some of the 25 chansons
(rondeaux and ballads) and isorhythmic and free motets (eg. Vergene bella)
recorded on this CD were effectively composed for festive occasions.
‘Resvelliés Vous’ was composed for the wedding of Carlo I Malatesta and
Vittoria Colonna in 1423 (when Dufay was in Rimini in the service of the
condottiere, Carlo Malatesta), ‘Salve Flos Tuscae Gentis was composed for
the people of Florence, and Ecclesiae Militantis’ was composed for Pope
Eugenius IV (see photo). In 1434, Dufay became kapellmeister of Louis I,
Duke of Savoy. Pope Eugenius IV relied heavily on the support of this duke.
The ensemble ‘Gothic Voices’ (Catherine King, Steven Harrold, Julian
Podger and Stephen Charlesworth) is joined by mezzo-soprano Clare
Wilkinson and instrumentalists Jane Achtman, vihuela d’arco and fiddle,
Andrew Lawrence-King, organ, regal, harp and psaltery, Keith McGowan,
dulcian and shawm, and Emily White, sackbut. The festive motets and
chansons are programmatically subdivided into four thematic episodes, ‘Ce
jour de l’an’, ‘A Reflection’, ‘Solemn Celebration’ and ‘Playful
Celebration’.

In een imaginair maar veelzijdig spektakel, gesitueerd ergens rond 1470,
rond de grootste pre-Renaissance componist, Guillaume Dufay, betreden we
met deze heel, heel bijzondere cd, de wereld van een groots huwelijksfeest
op nieuwjaarsdag, gevierd met motetten en chansons van Dufay, en met
feestelijke instrumenten om de pracht en praal luister bij te zetten.
Uit de laatste bloei van het middeleeuws tijdperk horen we in de typische
Bourgondische virtuositeit van de vocale polyfone motetten van Dufay, hoe
zijn muzikale rijkdom van de “formes fixes”, “stile fermata”, Faux bourdon
harmonisering (basis van de harmonische sonoriteit van de Renaissance) en
“Ars subtilior” (isoritmie), en zijn combinatie van elementen uit de “Ars nova”,
de polyfone “English manner” van John Dunstable, en Italiaanse
madrigalismen, het punt bereikte waarop zijn muziek, stilistisch en expressief,
overging in de nieuwe, muzikale artisticiteit en ideeën van de Renaissance.
Het Dufay-spektakel viert op deze cd het genie van Dufay met een
eclectische voorstelling van vocale en instrumentale, stoeiende en
gepassioneerde robuustheid, klaaglijke devotionele passie, nu eens met
trage, donkere ritmes, dan weer met vrolijke cascades van melodieën, en
opwindende complexe ritmes.
Zoals het chanson “Ce jour de l’an”, dat op de cd centraal staat zijn belofte
voor het nieuwe jaar inluidt (één keer monodisch gezongen door de bariton
Stephen Charlesworth en twee geïmproviseerde versies op vihuela d’arco en
psalterium), is “Ce jour de l’an” daadwerkelijk een dag om te vieren.
Bepaalde van de 25 opgenomen chansons (rondeaux en ballades) en
isoritmische en vrije motetten (bv. “Vergene bella”) op deze cd, werden
effectief gecomponeerd voor feestelijke aangelegenheden. “Resvelliés Vous”
werd gecomponeerd voor het huwelijk in 1423 van Carlo I Malatesta en
Vittoria Colonna (Dufay was in Rimini in dienst van de condottiero, Carlo
Malatesta), “Salve Flos Tuscae Gentis” werd gecomponeerd voor de

dulciaan en chalumeau, en Emily White, sackbut. De feestelijk motetten en
de chansons worden op de cd programmatisch onderverdeeld in 4
thematische episoden, “Ce jour de l’an”, “A Reflection”, “Solemn Celebration”
en “Playful Celebration”.
De vier leden van “Gothic Voices” en hun vijf gasten, presenteren met deze
cd een magistrale, sfeervolle evocatie van de immense, poëtische en
muzikale rijkdom van het tijdperk van de Bourgondiërs, de hussieten, het
concilie van Bazel (1431) en de tijd van de tegenpausen (bvb. Amadeus van
Savoye als Paus Felix V). De schitterende uitvoering getuigt zowel vocaal als
instrumentaal, van een weergaloze technische en expressieve perfectie.
