Imagine a banquet on New Year’s Day, in an indeterminate city in northern Italy, probably at the
end of the 15th century. The celebration, therefore, is two-fold in nature, honouring the happy
spouses and by taking place on such a marked date. The presence of Dufay, guest of honour at
the event because of his music, is another reason that makes it significant and special. Starting
from this hypothetical situation and demonstrating once again its ability to create attractive and
original projects, Gothic Voices presents its second album, recorded for the Scottish label Linn
Records, with a programme which interweaves five isorhythmic motets and diverse songs by the
Franco-flemish composer, arranged into four sections well defined by their character and by their
order in the celebration: “The welcome”, “A reflection”, “Solemn celebration” and “Festive
celebration”. The song Ce jour de l’an, obviously enough, serves as the main thread of the
programme in its different versions. The honesty and the artistic and technical capacity of Gothic
Voices in what they have put forward is admirable, in which the voices gain importance, supported
by the instruments, but never in an unnecessary or contrived manner, nor as a facilitating
shortcut. They are a simple but masterful brushstroke of colour to the main framework of the
whole, upheld by the experienced voices, thus avoiding the monotony. It is worth mentioning the
exemplary bonding amongst the singers in their different combinations, also with the
instrumentalists. The joint interactions of Clare Wilkinson and Catherine King, and these likewise
with Steven Harrold prove it, who are in perfect fusion in any case, as if there were instruments in
the place of voices. Another fantastic album by the group.

Imagínese un banquete en el día de Año Nuevo, en una ciudad indeterminada del norte de Italia,
seguramente a finales del siglo XV. La celebración, por supuesto, lo es por partida doble: por los
felices contrayentes y también por tener lugar en tan señalada fecha. Dufay, invitado de honor al
evento a través de su música, es otro de los motivos que la convierten en una cita señalada y
especial. Partiendo de esta hipotética situación y haciendo gala una vez más de su capacidad
para confeccionar atractivos y originales proyectos, Gothic Voices presenta su segundo álbum
grabado para el sello escocés Linn Records, con un programa que entreteje cinco motetes
isorrítmicos y diversas canciones del compositor franco- flamenco, todos ellos divididos en cuatro
secciones bien delimitadas por su carácter y por el orden que ocupan en la celebración: “La
bienvenida”, “Una reflexión”, “Celebración solemne” y “Celebración festiva”. La canción Ce jour de
l’an, cuál si no, hace de hilo conductor del programa en sus diversas versiones. Es admirable la
honestidad y la capacidad artística y técnica de Gothic Voices en su propuesta, en la que las
voces cobran importancia, apoyadas por los instrumentos, pero nunca de manera innecesaria y
evidente, tampoco como atajo facilitador. Estos son una simple pero magistral pincelada de color
al entramado principal, sustentado en las experimentadas voces del conjunto, logrando así evitar
la monotonía. Cabe destacar el modélico ejercicio de empaste entre los cantantes en sus distintas
combinaciones, también con los instrumentistas. Ahí están las intervenciones conjuntas de Clare
Wilkinson y Catherine King, y de esta con Steven Harrold, para demostrarlo, en perfecta fusión en
cualquier caso, como si de instrumentos en lugar de voces se tratara. Otro estupendo álbum del
conjunto.
