Gothic Voices: The Dufay Spectacle is a varied musical banquet.

Gothic Voices, with its almost forty years of existence, is one of the most esteemed early music ensembles, but has always renewed itself. Their latest CD, The Dufay Spectacle, is the sounding proof of this: a tribute to Guillaume Dufay, the greatest composer of the 15th century, in the form of a wide-ranging selection from his oeuvre, arranged into a musical banquet of alternating variety. It goes from big to small and back again, but it is precisely in that middle area, of refined two- and three-voice polyphony, that the pearls sit.
For variety there are also instrumental sections: adaptations written at the time, but also short improvisations. A ‘bray-harp’ places wonderfully buzzing accents of timbre. In the festive opening and closing pieces, a regal, a shawm and a trombone provide a robust bass and an orchestral opulence. But above all, it is the melodic richness and the rhythmic ingenuity that continue to allow this music, almost six centuries old, to fascinate and amaze.-

Gothic Voices hoort met zijn bijna veertig jarige bestaan tot de eerbiedwaardigste oudemuziekensembles, maar heeft zich steeds verjongd. Hun jongste cd, The Dufay Spectacle, is daarvan het klinkende bewijs: een eerbetoon aan Guillaume Dufay, de grootste componist van de 15de eeuw, in de vorm van een ruimhartige keuze uit zijn oeuvre, gearrangeerd tot een afwisselend muzikaal banket. Het gaat van groot naar klein en weer terug, maar juist in dat middendeel, met verfijnde twee- en driestemmige polyfonie, zitten de parels.
Ter afwisseling zijn er ook instrumentale onderdelen: bewerkingen uit die tijd, maar ook korte improvisaties. Een ‘bray-harp’ plaatst wonderlijk zoemende timbre-accenten. In de feestelijke openings- en sluitstukken zorgen een regaal, een schalmei en een trombone voor robuuste bassen en een orkestrale opulentie. Maar bovenal zijn het de melodische rijkdom en het ritmisch vernuft die maken dat deze bijna zes eeuwen oude muziek blijft boeien en verbazen.
